Hailing from London, French Nancy boasts a nostalgic, luscious sonic livery packed with post-punk and darkwave references, all distilled into bite-sized, hazy indie pieces with a certain gloominess to them. Yet, the listening experience is euphoric and vibrant, offering a slice of leftfield energy to any keen listener. ‘The Vow’ is the perfect evidence of that. French Nancy’s latest effort, it delves deeper into krautrock sensibilities and striking drum machines, with the duo’s signature shimmering guitars floating on top of it.
Calling Hackney’s cultural and eclectic hub their home, the single is not the British duo’s first rodeo. Boasting previous militance in like-minded outfits, Jack Gooding and Joe Friel offer a striking, heart-shaking look at vintage influences interlaced with modern flair, a formula further augmented by their cathartic, mysterious vocals. ‘The Vow’ was recorded at Gun Factory Studios in London.
Speaking about the lyricism behind the piece, French Nancy explain: “It reflects on the fragility of human connection and the strength we try to find, rightly or wrongly, when faced with failure and uncertainty. Ambiguity runs deep, leaving the listener to interpret whether it’s a story of a relationship, self-discovery, or both.”
