Not all records come out perfect. We often get sent stuff that’s not 100% there yet, and one can easily see it. In the case of ‘Coasting’, we were actually impressed by how good the single is! Not overplaying its cards, the track builds a quirky and gentle identity over dreamy indie matter, partly lo-fi and partly shoegaze. The sonic quality it’s absolutely flawless, with a tight, intense and controlled production providing a perfect home for Freddy Merkky’s light and charismatic vocals.
A rather long offering – clocking in at almost four minutes – ‘Coasting’ comes alive during the middle guitar solo, extremely vibey and raw, drenched in a myriad of organic and electronic textures. Upon waning, such an intriguing solo leaves space for a liquid synth and a clean guitar arpeggio, all unbelievably glorious.
Growing its intensity over time, ‘Coasting’ reaches its peak during the outro, then waving goodbye with a deconstructed decrescendo. Hailing from London, Merkky has a small catalogue to his name, so far, but we are confident we’ll be seeing him on bigger stages very soon.
