As alt-folk indie goes, ‘Emily’ is certainly aiming high. The latest effort by hazy Southampton duo Pegasuses, the track is a blissful slice of cathartic energy, a nuanced, honest dive into the project’s acoustic universe and honest lyricism. Introduced by a gentle yet evocative guitar, the single soon benefits from a suggestive pedal steel guitar, here performed by collaborator Mike Davies. Russell Marsden’s brushed drums work perfectly in the context, allowing founding members Dave Miatt and Laura Lamb’s luscious vocals to completely crown the record.
Taken from Pegasuses’ upcoming album ‘Sea of Joy’, ‘Emily’ doesn’t pretend to be what it’s not. Relatable and welcoming, its enticing folk character makes it easy to appreciate, delivering a vibrant, epic listening experience that’s never boring or obvious. Yet, one that feels familiar and traditional. Produced and mixed by Russell Marsden at Snook Studio, the piece is certainly one of the best folk records we have come across recently.
Scrolling through Pegasuses’ social media we noticed the intimate performances they bless their audience with. Just vocals and guitar, off stage and with the public around them in a semicircle. Rather authentic, and a nice break from the current industry trend of ‘putting up a show’. No bells and whistles here, just pure, unfiltered artistry.
