‘The Optimist’ is a deceptively simple song. Built over buoyant indie-pop tones with a hidden dreamy quality, the record might appear as a straightforward indie piece at first, a light and positive effort built on Flavor Wave’s soothing, reflective artistry. Yet, at a deeper look, one realises how the track’s lyricism opens up a gloomy, more personal conversation, dealing with the challenges of human life and the painful occurrences that can arise from time to time.
Of course, there’s a great deal of personal experience in it. In fact, the keen listener will be able to relate to it on an individual level, a sign of the song’s relevance. There’s no doubt that Flavor Wave have somehow managed something special here, transforming what appears like a playful indie bit into a nuanced, elegant metaphor for the unpredictability of human existence. Hailing from West Chester, in the US, FW has a clear idea about where they are headed, with ‘The Optimist’ giving us a glimpse of it.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the single, lead singer Kyle Loedel explains: “When I first heard the melody, I knew it did not have to have a deep message. Kind of a story of an average guy in modern times going through the mysteries life brings us. So I tried to add some lines of things anyone could relate to in the verses, then connect it to a central message in the chorus, that this life given to us can be cruel, but the more we give, the more we get.”
