Flavor Wave describe themselves as an indie rock band, but truthfully, what we hear in ‘Motivation’ showcases them as much more than that. Incorporating a distinct pop and funk outlook, the American group pens an eclectic, dynamic gem, a piece that’s playful and groovy yet evocative and meaningful. The record introduces itself through wah-wah’d guitars and syncopated drums, then breaking into mellower sections and fuzzier tones.
From a production standpoint, ‘Motivation’ is a strikingly good product. Tyler Ripley is responsible for it, together with Little Brother Audio Studio in West Philadelphia. Flavor Wave double vocals setup works very well, giving the song a rather elegant flair, perhaps borrowing from power-pop and nostalgic influences (for instance, the drummer is one of the singers). Overall, this is a compelling record: light, yet nuanced.
Built on empowering lyricism, ‘Motivation’ doesn’t take long to offer relatable points. As guitarist Patrick Blair explains: “I’ve always felt that the song is about self-motivation, and not being afraid to change yourself for the better even though it’s going to take effort and a lot of time. The song is inspiring for the listener, and I think it’s important for everybody to take something positive away from the song after listening to it.”
