Boasting a luscious and evocative sound, London-based outfit First Day of Spring perfectly fits the ideal of an underground band. Balancing themselves among shoegaze, new wave and alt-rock, the group employs an anthemic, indie-driven lyricism, crafting a musical formula that’s frankly irresistible. Placing vocals at the forefront of their mixes, they make sure the records remain relatable and accessible, and it’s clearly working.
‘Be My Hospital’ is the strongest evidence of that. A nuanced and intense EP, yet sleazy and casual in its approach, the release sees First Day of Spring doing what they do better: sharing hazy, intense material with a high escapist value. Among four stunning offerings, the band delves deep into emotional stylings and brit-rock coolness, emerging victorious and with a newly found, glorious aura around them.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the EP, First Day of Spring explain: “Some of the themes running through songs like ‘On Monday’ and ‘Be My Hospital’ are centred around being a visual artist and songwriter and feeling profoundly disillusioned in your creative practice, when figuring out whether or not the work is the most enjoyable part of it – or that real success is to never have to work a day in your life.”
