Describing themselves as “big on vintage gear”. Aussie outfit Eyecolour reveals a lot about what they stand for. Imagine the most hypnotising, ethereal and psychedelic indie sound, drenched in vintage synths and cosmic drums: that’s what you can expect from them. Lucky for us all, the band has just released their debut album ‘Giallo’. A kaleidoscopic long record, ‘Giallo’ explores the project’s quirky sonic livery and its many personalities.
From the indie-pop, slightly new wave territories of ‘We’re All Just Dogs’ – reminding us of a young Gary Numan and Tubeway Army – the album then makes its way towards more uplifting and bubbly psych tones, with ‘Death From Above’. ‘Collapse’ is decisively retro and synth-pop laced, drenched into a detuned soundscape that’s quite psychedelic and vaporous.
To be honest with you all, ‘Giallo’ is a better record than we would expect it to be. There’s a strong Synth Britannia vibe in it, a curious phenomenon given Eyecolour’s Australian citizenship. Special mention to ‘Churchill Blue’, perhaps one of the most shoegaze episodes (M83 anyone?). Yeah, there’s a healthy amount of electronica here – drum machines are definitely incoming in future records. Aren’t they?
