It’s been a crucial year for Australian songstress EWAH. Releasing music after a fourteen-year hiatus is not an easy feat, yet she delved naturally into it, channelling years of difficulty and personal challenges into cathartic, dreamy material with expansive lyricism and a hopeful contour. In it, EWAH teaches us a series of cautionary tales she’s learned over the years. They are not treated in a negative way, more like an honest display of fragility – something we all share as humans.
Following up on a string of singles released earlier this year, ‘Souvenir’ completes EWAH’s artistic comeback. Over eight stunningly nuanced pieces, the Aussie creative borders dream pop, alt-folk and leftfield pop elements, resulting in a record that’s incredibly personal and authentic. From a sonic standpoint, the album is rather organic in its instrumentation, yet still packed with textures and synth goodness. It’s very elegant in that aspect.
EWAH’s luscious vocals are a joy to listen to, and frankly, it makes us very happy to see her getting back to music. We completely understand how life can easily sway one’s artistic drive. It happened to us too. (Not) surprisingly, self-expression always finds its way back, eventually.
