Well, this was a cathartic, transformative experience. Don’t be too quick to dismiss Evelyn Bates as soundscapes or background music. In truth, ‘Ursa Major’ is more of an aural experience, the chance to collect one’s thoughts and jump into the deepest corner of our collective consciousness. Performed on a prepared piano, the track sees Bates focusing on a solo piano piece mainly on the high-registry, resulting in a composition that’s gentle, soft, yet very relevant and poignant.
Also known for her regular incursions in pop music, the London-based songstress is an artist in the true sense of the word; an explorer of creativity, she aims for pure, unfiltered personal expression, whether through modern commercial anthem or leftfield, experimental material. Everything counts, allowing Bates to connect with a wider audience that sympathises with her eclectic approach.
Speaking about the record, she explains: “All my compositions are written by myself, recorded on a grand piano, live and I don’t use samples, as I’m looking for a very authentic sound. I’m releasing piano compositions every month and a pop song every other month”. We’ll follow the journey, Evelyn!
