I was lucky enough to write about Evelí Ray last year, praising ‘Like Wolves’ as “rather nuanced and celebrative, sharing a strong cinematic energy combined with a heightened artistic sensibility”. Such a description also works when applied to the Barcelona-based songstress’ entire artistic output; a universe of elegant folk matter, often delivered with particularly cathartic lyricism and orchestral magic.
‘Ocean of You’ continues on the same path, incorporating an even more extreme sonic palette made up of Arabic and Indian instruments such as duduk, tabla and oud. An incredibly unique and immersive musical soundscape, further enriched by a myriad of spacious, ethereal textures and Ray’s evocative, magical vocal tone, resonating with fierceness and power over the whole production.
A record that’s perhaps sort of mystical, almost mysterious, ‘Ocean of You’ left me quite puzzled; the listening experience was quirky and highly reflective, rather intimate. Speaking about the track, ‘Evelí explains: “This song talks about wandering in the shadows and longing for light. We might reconnect with the source of love (this ocean of energy we all come from) within in silence and then share it in the arms of the beloved”.
