‘Seasons of the Wind’ is a pretty old-school EP, at least in its sonic livery. To be honest, it’s quite refreshing too. Taking a break from the usual commercial chaos, the record offers unapologetic and fierce guitar tones, galloping drum grooves and raw, intense vocals. Inspired by hard rock and thrash metal from the ’70s and ’80s, ‘Seasons of the Wind’ might take a retro approach to its material, but its lyricism is firmly placed in the contemporary.
Penned by American rocker and guitarist Erik Hansen, the EP features five tracks, each one with a distinctive character to it. If ‘The Road’ introduces Hansen with a slow-tempo yet hard-hitting grunge anthem, ‘Send Me A Sign’ raises the temperature in favour of uplifting energy, only to then leave space for ‘Horizon’, the record’s ballad, drenched in acoustic tones and folk-flavoured storytelling.
‘Traveler and ‘Forever Dream’ take the EP to a close in a distorted fashion, reiterating Hansen’s majestic sonic character. Featured on the record, we also find fellow musicians Pamela Moore (of Queensryche fame), Chris Gohde (My Sister’s Machine, Accused A.D.) and John Hansen (father of Erik).
