I was not ready for ‘Estar Contigo’. You see, it’s a rare gem, a vintage, old-school fusion and Latin tune with a strong eclectic component, and a charming soprano sax part that’s just incredibly elegant. Penned by Ricardo y Rey, the record empowers a bouncy, cumbia-style groove with an array of guitars and keys around it, featuring fellow musicians Morgan J Price (on the aforementioned sax) and Danton Boller on upright bass.
The American duo’s vocals are gentle and soothing, yet expressive and evocative, helping the listener enter their kaleidoscopic, rich artistic universe. Closing in anthemic fashion with strings stabs making it a radiophonic hit candidate, ‘Estar Contigo’ also flourishes on a sax solo that’s jazz-flavoured, and truly enchanting. What more could you want?
Hailing from New York, the project features Ricardo (Quiñones) and Rey (Reinaldo de Jesus), the human and creatives behind the moniker. If ‘Estar Contigo’ is anything to go by, we are confident that there will be more interesting records coming our way soon…
