Enter Red Bird’s Jazz-Infused Paradise

A heavy name in the west coast music scene, jazz-infused outfit Red Bird has been turning heads far and wide since 2018, thanks to their debut album ‘All My Love’. Now turning their attention towards a fuller ensemble, the addition of bass, drums and organ completes their line-up perfectly, greatly enhancing their kaleidoscopic influences. The project’s latest release, ‘Real’, absorbs everything from jazz to funk, sharing a high soulful charge, with a certain acid-jazz flavour. Lyrically, Red Bird tell tales of self-reflection and self-awareness, warning about carrying a ‘mask’ over your own personality.

We don’t often come across such refined musicianship. ‘Real’ really hits the mark, by offering playing expertise that’s unmatched. Introduced by a clean electric guitar, the verse jumps into a funky, groovy paradise, before slowly building up the intensity towards the instrumental break. The addition of a Hammond organ makes the difference, providing ‘beef’ and poignancy, while accompanying the guitar solo in jazzy fashion. The drums are precise, controlled and stylistically authentic. Eventually, guitar and vocals take centre stage, posing the cornerstone for a masterpiece. Vocalist Bre Gregg, also fronting the group, makes a stellar job of her parts, showcasing charm, technique and lyrical prowess.

Overall, a stellar job from Red Bird. Not a record for everyone, we’ll admit, but for the eclectic listener, that’s the promised land.
