Enter Mieu’s Smooth and Blissful Sonic Universe with ‘Love So Grand’ EP

Delving into Mieu’s discography, one thing stood out almost instantly: the project is getting better and better with each release, slowly maturing into an eclectic dream-pop staple. Infused with R&B tinges and traces of Japanese pop, the Los Angeles-based duo navigates ethereal and liminal territories, preferring modulating and buoyant synth-laden soundscapes, vintage drum machines and spacious vocals. It’s a formula that is rather nostalgic, yet also relatable.

‘Love So Grand’ is the perfect example of that. Mieu’s latest effort, the EP takes the listeners on a five-track dazzling sonic journey, one that’s pensive, introspective, and packed with lyrical escapism, a quality closely related to the group’s aural character. It’s not all airy and glimmering, though; ‘Affection’ finds a more evocative and emotional path, partly contrasting with its follow-up, Japanese-flavoured jewel ‘Get Closer’.

‘Butterfly’ takes a decisively gloomier approach, with striking percussions and a deep, fuzzy bass perfectly contrasting with Shelley Zhao’s celestial, cathartic vocal tone. Chris Nocturnes does a great job on the production, perfectly matching Zhao’s blissful artistry. ‘Purple Night’ continues with traditional synthwave and pop elements, well-paired with the crepuscular title track. Defined by Mieu as “recalling the effortlessly cool vibe of Sade”, the song is incredibly smooth and soft, lulling the listeners into a relaxed, sultry mood, one that we won’t forget anytime soon. It’s also very elegant.

Expanding on their sonic energy, the two creatives explain: “In an age defined by noise, the song’s subtlety is its charm. It’s the type of music you put on for walking through the city at night, or add to an intimate dinner playlist.”
