People might define jimrat as a shoegaze outfit. In reality, there’s so much more to them: from the extremely noisy territories of the ambiguous ‘i hate shoegaze’ to the psych, post-rock shores of ‘feel it out’, everything points towards what we would describe as ‘destructive eclecticism’ – a term that signifies the band’s tendency to borrows diverse genres and blend them in a flurry of fuzzy distortions and noisy textures.
‘something’ is the perfect evidence of that. jimrat’s latest effort, the piece layers heavy, gritty tones with heartwarming melodies and collective vocals, a stark contrast of 90s-like roughness and modern poignancy. What’s important to note is that we haven’t heard anyone else do it yet, at least in such a vibrant, meaningful fashion.
Now, we are not here to police whether you should call them a shoegaze band or not. You may do so. Yet, such a definition will often feel out of place, or right on the fringe. Then again, putting things into boxes might not be the right approach, in this case.
Speaking about ‘something’, jimrat explains: “The age-old question of what if Jesus and Mary Chain also really liked Skrillex was answered in this song.”
