We are rather familiar with Eilis Frawley. Berlin-based and with a keen eye for eclecticism and politically charged, reflective lyricism, the talented drummer and composer has recently returned with another hard-hitting piece, ‘Hallucinations’, a record that is sonically delightful as it is meaningful and nuanced.
Built over delicate, playful and elegant tones, the single layers steady, tight drums with blissful pluck and light soundscapes, then switching towards a more quirky direction with drum machine claps and creative grooves. But enough jibber jabber: yes, the music is fantastic. Yet, what really makes the difference here is Frawley and Kat Frankie’s spoken words, embarking on an honest conversation about Berlin’s party culture and its destructive dark side.
As Eilis explains: “‘Hallucinations’ reflects on the roles of hobbies and habits. How, seemingly harmless habits can grow bigger and bigger, and develop into something negative. It’s a wish, to enjoy life, have hobbies, but don’t let your hobbies take over your entire existence. Musically, ‘Hallucinations’ is my favourite track from the album (Kat’s too), it skips along, with a subconscious train of thoughts and before you know it you’re singing along to the outro.”
Frawley’s latest album ‘Fall Forward’ is out now.
