Mumbo is a London-based three-piece consisting of Doug MacGowan, Emma Semple, and Antonio Dale. Last month, the band released their first single of 2023, the dreamy, delicate, and ethereal ‘Sky Is Blue’. Delving into a range of sonic landscapes and experimenting with various vocal styles, guitar textures, and percussive beats, Mumbo takes you from laidback scenes to modern blues and psychedelic rock with ease. The band’s musical palette truly knows no bounds, and it would be impossible and, frankly, a disservice, to “label” them and stick them in a box!
Drawing on inspiration from the likes of Cocteau Twins, Mazzy Star, Goldfrapp, and Little Feat, Mumbo brings their own special blend of shoegazy dream-pop to the party. Semple’s vocals on the tune are simply breathtaking and, with her soothing, angelic, and silvery voice, she provides an extra layer of tranquillity and calmness to proceedings.
Mumbo has steadily been gaining a solid and growing fanbase, and ‘Sky Is Blue’ will surely just solidify the band’s place in the music scene. The song transports you to another world and with their willingness to experiment and push boundaries, they’re a band that I cannot wait to hear more from!
