What makes a good song? Catchy melodies, relatable lyricism… that makes it for us. That’s why we instantly connected to Emily Koko’s latest effort, ‘Reminder’. Emerging from London, the talented newcomer seems to have found a fitting artistic formula for her introspective and nuanced persona. Layering intimate, cinematic-flavoured electronic pop with charismatic and evocative vocals, ‘Reminder’ flourishes in a triumph of poignancy and fragility.
Fragility, yes: that’s something inherently palpable in Koko’s artistic output, a feature that really draws the listeners in, making them feel part of the lyrical storytelling. Emily’s ability to reverse her deepest consciousness into the lyrics is stunning.
Part of the artist development programme at SAFO Music Group, the German songstress collaborated with Laurence Hobbs in crafting the musical gem we can now enjoy. ‘Reminder’ marks the fourth single for Koko, continuing a journey that has been in the making since her debut, in 2020.
Lyrically, the record deals with nostalgia and acceptance, exploring the difficult action of letting go. As Emily explains: “The song is about losing someone and reminiscing about the past. It’s like you lost yourself, when you lost them. You keep wondering if you should hold on to them or move on.”
