We had the pleasure of interviewing Ellery Twining earlier this year, crafting a piece aptly titled: “I dipped into my poetry background and explored spoken words”. Well, the American creative stays true to his words. ‘DUSTY SPRINGFIELD’S RECORD COLLECTION’ is Twining’s latest effort, a charmingly dreamy and hazy tune with a fantastic spoken word outlook. Originally released as part of last year’s ‘RESULTS’ album, the track now gets given a new visual livery in the form of a music video.
Jumping into vintage shoegaze and art rock territories, Ellery reminds us of seminal, leftfield groups such as Drop Nineteens, and even The Notwist’s modern indie orchestral appeal. Built on a simple drum groove, short textures, acoustic guitars and marimba-like percussions, ‘DUSTY SPRINGFIELD’S RECORD COLLECTION’ delivers the perfect setting for Twining’s casual yet melancholic lyricism.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the song, Ellery explains: “Working at The Mystic Disc record store, since 1995, has brought me many memorable musical moments of importance. When the store bought the record collection that belonged to Dusty Springfield, it was an indelible moment – That’s why I wrote a song about it.”
