Deeply inspired by the soundtrack and aesthetic of seminal American surrealist series Twin Peaks, ‘Like Before’ is incredibly gentle and elegant. It’s a blissful, heavenly slice of dreaminess further heightened by the evocative, luscious vocals of Argentinian songstress Eli Verano. Following up on previous effort ‘El Mañana’, ‘Like Before’ reveals a specific trend in the project’s nuanced artistic output.
Built on spacious and expansive synth-pop character, Verano’s scope of action is often directed towards pensive, whimsical pieces, wrapping the listeners into an aural experience that’s multi-faceted and cathartic. ‘Like Before’ particularly excels at that. Packed with retro-flavoured synths and honey-like melodies, the record fully embraces Angelo Badalamenti’s masterpiece, while also mirroring Lynch’s ambiguous, mysterious storytelling.
Overall, we are deeply impressed with Verano. ‘Like Before’ is exactly the kind of track we dig here at Mesmerized. A piece made for escapism, a precious feature in times like these. Digging deeper into her work, Eli explains: “When we were working on this EP, we dreamed that David Lynch would hear it one day. Sadly, we now release this music in loving memory of a visionary filmmaker, hoping to carry forward a piece of his world in our own way.”
