‘false promise’ feels more like a masterclass than an EP. The record is immensely nuanced, drawing from electronic music’s tradition while looking to the future. As we see it, its core concept flourishes over traditional jungle and drum’n’bass beats, overlaid with abstract and hyper-pop-flavoured drones and textures. It all makes for an engaging and evocative EP, wrapping the listener in intense rave energy and controlled escapism. That’s one of the project’s main strengths, a powerful goal for drgnr. Hailing from London, the talented producer can be usually found within future garage realms.
‘carried away’ opens the record with a slick and light jungle groove, paired with ethereal vocal samples and bright synthetisers. A vintage Amen Break joins the sonic picture soon enough, taking us back to the late 90s and warehouse raves. Such a vibrant atmosphere presents itself again in ‘midnight echoes’, charged with emotional and anthemic energy.
‘side number’ is certainly more modern, once again a retro jungle and garage bonanza. ‘feeling up’ trades mellower sections with renowned moments of sonic fury. Eventually, ‘false promise’ feels almost psychedelic, in its wider sense: the listening experience is hypnotising and cathartic – lose yourself in it!
