It took me a while to decide whether I wanted to share Electric Picnic’s dreamy, eclectic effort ‘Rehearsed Smile’. Admittedly, the group is starting out just now, slowly finding their way into the European music landscape. Hailing from Finland, Aleksandra, Joao, Eduardo, and Aku tread the fine line between indie extravaganza and pop prowess, making for material that’s expansive and vaporous, yet rowdy and vibrant.
Eventually, I came to the conclusion that the band is on their path to a rather convincing formula. In that sense, ‘Rehearsed Smile’ feels like a step up, both from a production standpoint and a creative perspective. In particular, the way the track shifts from a post-punk/shoegaze aesthetic into Eurodance-flavoured electronica is pretty compelling, never descending into clichés or dated resolutions. Aleksandra’s ethereal, angelic vocals are a perfect match for such a vivid arrangement.
They have certainly reached their goal: ‘Rehearsed Smile’ is absolutely dreamy and cathartic. The single also anticipates an upcoming EP, described by Electric Picnic as packed “with stories of dreams, infatuation, love, crush, childhood memories and more…”.
