Eilis Frawley Returns with Striking Spoken Work Piece ‘Be A Lady’

One thing we admire in Eilis Frawley’s artistic journey is the way she constantly releases music with purpose, her records all connected by an invisible thread, exploring the intricate societal expectations about women and the way feminism helps expose them all. A keen lover of the spoken word format – which we actually really love too – Frawley has recently unveiled ‘Be A Lady’, a striking piece shining a light on gendered language.

Boasting musicianship of the highest level, Frawley became a percussionist and drummer in her Australian homeland, before taking a trip around the world that now sees her based in Berlin. Her records tell a tale of many influences and god-like taste, incorporating leftfield and alternative elements within a digestible, popular framework.

‘Be A Lady;’ features sung vocals by Kat Frankie. Speaking about the lyricism in it, Frawley explains: “We teach children from a very young age how to behave in a manner deemed appropriate for their (often assumed) gender. Girls from a very young age are taught how to act like ‘women’ and how to cater to the expectations of cisgender men. Gendered language often misgenders people, we don’t need this added frustration in what is often meant to be ‘harmless chit-chat’.”
