2024 marked an important comeback year for Eddie Cohn. Following up on his earlier releases, the Los Angeles-based rocker returned in full force with a sizeable number of new records, a process that has renewed our interest in Cohn’s relatable, meaningful storytelling. A keen observer of the political and societal reality around him, Eddie layers such lyricism over a vibrant pop-rock arrangement, often with a distinct nostalgic flair.
‘Stop Waving The Gun’ is the Californian creative’s latest effort, a welcome follow-up from last summer’s ‘Keep Them Away’, a single we featured here on Mesmerized. Confirming Cohn’s biggest inspiration, the new track reeks of rowdy, grunge-flavoured guitar tones and Bono-like anthemic vocals, making for a tune that’s sharp and hard-hitting, yet nuanced and deep. While such background makes for a record steeped in familiar elements, ‘Stop Waving The Gun’ also sounds pretty authentic, ultimately confirming Cohn’s artistic stature.
Taking the issue of gun violence at heart, Eddie seeks to educate listeners on the controversial ‘violent’ nature of modern American culture, especially when related to ongoing mental health issues. As he so eloquently explains: “I don’t typically write about cultural events or political ideas, however, about 18 months ago, when this song was written, I found myself so incredibly angry and incensed by the gun culture in America. I don’t even remember the school shooting that was ultimately the inspiration for this song.”
