In everyone’s life, it comes a time when a new, clean slate is necessary – a new beginning. And when you do that, you do it with a beginner’s mind. British singer and songwriter Ed Wallis knows it very well. After a successful run with his former band My Sad Captains (Bella Union), he felt the need to rebuild something from scratch, perhaps a project that would be more authentic towards his current reality. So he did: Green Rays was born. Joined by former bandmates, Wallis launched the project with the EP ‘Run’, an indie gem balanced over indietronica and folk-rock.
We have mentioned a ‘beginner’s mind’ above, which pretty much sums up both Green Rays’ new venture into the music scene and their brand new single, the aptly-named ‘Beginner’s Mind’. Of course, they are all except beginners, truthfully. But their approach may very well be: looking for the sacred well of artistic inspiration, they must open up their expectations and beliefs. And perhaps have a little trust. A feeling Wallis describe as “approaching something in a state of openness, as a beginner”.
The results are staggering: the record is almost ethereal in its sound references. Wallis’ airy, atmospheric vocals float on top of a heavenly instrumental, made up of luscious, clean guitars and light drums. An absolute feast for the ears. Green Rays are here to rock our world, if ‘Beginner’s Mind’ is anything to go by. They could rock yours too, just give them a chance… Trust, remember?
