Eclectic Duo Sable Share Quirky Music Video for ‘Contrarian’

Describing their music as ‘post-rock’, Santa Fe’s eclectic outfit Sable might be selling themselves short. You see, after a deeper look, it’s clear how the pair is incorporating strong jazz and fusion influences, packaged in a rather modern formula. Sounding like a cool blend between Pat Metheny (but also Chick Corea) and Animal As Leaders, the New Mexico-based duo confirms this charming quality in their latest effort, ‘Contrarian’.

Previously released in last year’s full-length ‘Ayllu Part 1.’, ‘Contrarian’ punches above its weight, incorporating Imani’s soulful and introspective vocals, so well supported by intriguing percussions, fusion guitar solos and jazzy drums. Interestingly, the track starts with a rather electronic imprint, gradually leaving space for a more organic arrangement.

Boasting Dmitri on drums, the pair have obviously reached an enviable musical alchemy, both in terms of instrumental dialogue and general artistry. Lyrically, the song seems to be focusing on the power of friendship, a theme also central to the previous main album. Speaking about the inspiration behind the track, Sable explains: “Contrarian’ was written about a somewhat mercurial friend who was always reluctant to hang out, but always made everything a better time when he did”.
