‘Hearts Get Started’ is the superb new album from Australian-born, now London-based conceptual pop artist Ebony Buckle. A genre-spanning ten-track offering, it serves as the follow-up to 2021’s critically acclaimed ‘Disco Lasers,’ and beautifully bridges the gap between folk, blues, rock, and pop. Intimate yet vast, adventurous yet down-to-earth, it’s a record that sums up the creative’s work with precision and care.
‘Fall Behind’ is the album opener and a haunting scene-setter. Cinematic and highly captivating, it’s a tune that seamlessly transitions between quiet chants and bold, expressive crescendos. The record’s title track then steps up to the plate in stunning fashion and puts Buckle’s angelic, silvery vocals firmly in the spotlight where they belong.
‘Golden Sand’ offers more heartfelt and introspective goodness, before ‘I Think I Just Saved My Own Life’ brings a slightly darker and brooding undertone to the fore.
“This album is a collection of songs written over several years,” says Ebony. “It feels like a puzzle, and when you put them together, they are stepping stones along the way of my musical adventure”.
Other personal favourites include ‘Soph My Dear,’ ‘Russian Dolls,’ and the record’s closer ‘Jupiter Rising’. Truthfully, however, the entire album deserves your attention. It’s utterly mesmerizing from start to finish!
