Do you know what we appreciate the most in an artist’s work? Their willingness to build a personal sound, refraining from trends and cliches, instead pursuing their own unique path, sculpting a sonic and lyrical framework unheard of, before. In a way, we find all of those characteristics in Kalulu’s latest EP, ‘Featuring’. Describing it is a proper challenge: the variety in references and themes is stunning, although one could trace a main thread in the bucolic folk components and the glimpses of avant-garde electronica.
A 5-track mesmerising record, ‘Featuring’ breaks the ice with what we can consider a lead single, ‘When Everything Falls’, also the recipient of a beautiful music video. In it, Kalulu seeks to find a silver lining to the pandemic, found in the act of spending quality time with his dog and husband. From a musical standpoint, the track is a slow-burn, experimental number, placing Kalulu’s ethereal and dreamy vocals on a bed of light electronica and vocal sampling.
Other notable efforts can be identified in ‘Comfort’ and ‘I Bought You Flowers’, both channelling an agile aura of luscious RnB and ambient energy. ‘Featuring’ takes his name from the many features on it: Leon den Engelsen, Wannes Salomé, and Holyoke (Kalulu’s husband) – they all lend their vocals, building something majestic and glorious.
