Believe it or not, the smooth and sultry sounds of ‘Kickback’ were actually recorded in the dorm room of Stamford-based genre-bending artist Cole Park, who performs under the simple moniker of Dry. With a Billy Joel-influenced opening, the tune quickly descends into a jazzy, groovy, and deeply immersive piece of music with interesting key changes and finely crafted details scattered throughout. It’s unique, intricate, and expertly pieced together.
Finding other sonic inspirations in the work of Jamiroquai, Incognito, and the James Taylor Quartet, Park delivers a seriously original and inventive track that stands out for all the right reasons. It also showcases a musician intent on pushing boundaries while always being committed to excellence.
“I have yet to hear anyone that has a sound like mine,” says Dry. “I put a lot of small details into it.” And he does! With each listen of ‘Kickback’, new layers of sound and meaning emerge, making it a song that deserves close attention.
With 2024 marking the start of Dry’s artistic journey, it’s clear he’s laying the groundwork for a trailblazing and lasting legacy.
