One thing that has always puzzled us is the Scandinavian obsession with Country and Americana music. Sweden and Norway are exceptional representatives of the genre, somehow managing to encapsulate that raw feeling of being lost in a limitless land. Geographically, that could make sense. The peninsula’s sparse landscape, with the population concentrating in few town centres, makes for a vast amount of natural land, where one could easily roam freely – like being in the Wild West.
Finnmark-based Down South Pepper Band are one of those Country and Americana outfits we were referring to. While they may be Norwegian, their hearts – and their artistry – feel deeply tied to the USA. Boasting almost a decade of rocking action, the talented duo champions friendly, approachable and positive vibes, exploring lyrical themes akin to a solitary explorer.
‘Moving Down South’ is the project’s latest effort, a playful take on travelling and the constant feeling of change. Describing the concept behind the lyrics, Down South Pepper Band explains: “a song about getting a new start, even if you actually didn’t want a new start”. The relatable theme gets drenched in twirling guitars, acoustic power and gritty, charismatic vocals. What more could you ever want?
