‘Sign on the Door’ is one of the most stunning, cinematic, anthemic, and downright exceptional tunes that I’ve heard so far this year. Created by Dora Lachaise and Jonni Slater, both currently based in Glasgow, it’s a song that was inspired by Nick Cave’s duets with Kylie Minogue and PJ Harvey. Hauntingly beautiful yet inviting at the same time, ‘Sign on the Door’ sees Slater getting minimalistic on keys and husky on vocals. Lachaise, meanwhile, brings her soul-stirring and unforgettable vocals to the party, and the pair proceed to cook up something rather magical.
The track was sparked by Slater’s love for novels and movies from the Cold War era. “We didn’t want to write love songs,” said Lachaise. “So we explored different subjects”. The pair also worked alongside the legendary James Sanger, (U2, Madonna, Dido, Keane, and many many more) who invited them to his studio in northern France.
‘Sign on the Door’ will serve as the first single from the duo’s upcoming EP ‘Weather Balloons’ which is scheduled for release on the eighth of June. I truly can’t wait to hear more music from these accomplished two. I think they’re onto something quite sonically special!
