‘Under the Gas’ is the brand new album from Houston-based duo Dompston Checks In. Made up of two brothers who go by Sludge Man and South Loop One respectively, Dompston Checks In draw on inspiration from the likes of Built to Spill, MGMT, They Might Be Giants, Ray Stevens, and Frank Zappa. A rather eclectic mix I must say, but it all seems to make sense when you listen to ‘Under the Gas’.
‘Shotgun Approach’ kicks off the album, and it’s a raw, gritty, and energetic little tune. It’s fuzzy… almost hazy, but that is done by design. Handling all of the recording, mixing, and mastering, the duo are fully in control of their sound. They’ve described the album as “an uncompromised idea with jagged edges”, and I truly could not have put it better myself. These are the types of albums that I just love exploring.
‘Real Life Cool Knife’ is the album’s fourth track, and it caught my attention as soon as I heard it. A trumpet-based classic ska song that showcases the band’s versatility and adaptability. Just brilliant!
With nine tunes that I have yet to mention, I think it’s best that you do yourself a favour and give ‘Under the Gas’ a listen!
