This is a pretty crucial and important story, one that needs to be told. Imagine a talented singer-songwriter, who happens to be a doctor by day. Imagine Covid-19 hitting daily life with its disruptive force, forcing said doctor to embark on a 2-year-long medical tour-de-force. Well, now that the emergency seems to be over, she (the doctor) is able to share her music with the world again. Going by the name of Alternate Jane, the Kuala-Lumpur songstress returns with ‘Higher Ground’, a rock-flavoured pop anthem with an extremely catchy and wonderful chorus.
Written with collaborator Melvin Rijlaarsdam (Optoproductions), based in the Netherlands, the creative process saw Jane recording vocals in her bedroom. Boasting a strong DIY ethos, ‘Higher Ground’ can be considered an international effort, showcasing how the modern music world is virtually borderless.
The song is inspired by the YouTube web series Project Inferno, with Alternate Jane channelling her love for James Bond movies and the band Garbage. Lyrically, the record is about feeling alive again after a surprising turn of events, giving new purpose to one’s life, and meeting someone you never thought you’d encounter, who changes your whole perspective on things.
Alternate Jane’s story is one of resilience, perseverance, and creativity. Despite facing rejections and obstacles, she has forged ahead, driven by the passion to create her own music and tell her story. As we declared previously, it’s a story that deserves to be told.
