Upon discovering Markus Murphy, one shall feel slightly disoriented; for instance, while being refreshed by the aural goodness reversed upon us, we also experienced a particular state of mind, one where our beliefs were suddenly disproved, as if we were entering an alternative universe where the history of music follows a different timeline, and genres and references are new, inconceivable, mind-blowing formulas. How? you’d ask. Well, Murphy’s artistry is unique: by bathing modern staples such as dream pop and psych influences into soulful and jazzy tones, the Montreal resident manages to generate innovative sonic matter, material so peculiar that instantly makes him a shockwave on the scene.
After releasing a debut EP in 2018, Markus has been refining the limits and bounds of his artistry, generating the nuanced, detailed stream of ethereal virtue we know today. His latest effort ‘Castel Made For Two’ confirms everything about him. Describing his own music as ‘dream-funk’, Murphy hits the mark: while tones are pensive and misty, the attitude is groovy, dynamic and ever-evolving. Championing Soul and R’n’B influences, the Canadian talent is able to decline them into free-form, chill arrangements, where one can both meet jazz solos and psych synth sweep, at the same time. Where are we?
If losing yourself in a sea of warm and luscious music sound good to you, give Markus Murphy a chance. You won’t regret it.
