Discovering Frank Dambra’s Enlightened Compositions in ‘Cosmic Thought’

A complex and kaleidoscopic EP, ‘Cosmic Thought’ won’t be for everyone. It is for us though, since we are called Mesmerized. Composed by American creative Frank Dambra, the record is as dreamy and ethereal as it can, while packing a considerable amount of intellectual content too. You see, we can describe it in layman’s terms, and in that regard it’s a spacious, bucolic masterpiece, blissfully floating on a giant white cloud. Like a stream of consciousness, the six tracks contained in ‘Cosmic Thought’ take the listeners on a rollercoaster of ever-evolving melodies, dissonant harmonies and veiled intensity. An absolutely magical experience.

But then, we can also go deeper in our analysis, and here is where we might lose some of the readers. You see, the EP contains a wealth of compositional knowledge that speaks volumes about Dambra’s nuanced musicianship. Blending jazz phrases with atonal harmonies, he manages to find a common ground between classical references and more modern stylings, delivering a piece of work that feels limitless and enlightened.

What’s more, it’s not just about the composition. The sonic aspect of it is pretty curious. Such a mellow piano – the main feature in ‘Cosmic Thought’ – is wrapped in a hazy, misty long reverb, taking the whole piece in decisively ambient and experimental territories. Frank Dambra’s past experiences in atmospheric electronic music come here to the surface, revealing the EP as the arriving point of years of artistic research.
