The keen listener will be hard-pressed into placing The Carrie Armitage Quartet inside a genre box; the thing is, it’s almost impossible. Incredibly eclectic and kaleidoscopic, the talented Canadian outfit navigates the past 60 years of musical history with gusto and charisma, going from classic fusion and jazz stylings to leftfield compositions and electronic soundscapes.
Guided by the musical expertise of Carrie Armitage, a proficient pianist and vocalist, the album celebrates the glorious fusion era of the late 80s and early 90s – in fact, it’s something we could see being released by GPR Records, as it carries the same amount of technical prowess and bold experimental flair common to a lot of their catalogue back in the day.
Next to Armitage’s nuanced piano solos and magical key tapestries, the album also flourishes on intense and impressive guitar solos delivered by Bob MacAlpine and Brian May (not related to Queen). Speaking about the concept behind such a masterpiece, Carrie explains: “This project came about when I found myself feeling the need to bring new energy into my work. I had completed 4 solo artist releases and became restless with my process. I wanted to reinvent how I was approaching composition”.
