There’s something magical about the current shoegaze revival. Often declined through lo-fi and retrowave lenses, the genre is a special treat for every keen music listener. We would describe it as an immersion in soothing musical goodness, capable of transporting you to an alternative universe, one where guitars have long reverbs and life tastes like honey. For instance, take Dunebug, London-based dreamer with a penchant for ethereal guitars and warming melodies.
Following up from previous effort ‘Lie to Me’ – which we had the pleasure of covering here – the British talent now returns with ‘Still Dreaming’, a nostalgic, slow-paced gem balancing between dream-pop and shoegaze influences. Organic drums, vintage-sounding guitars and keys, everything concurs into creating a very open, airy and celestial sound, the perfect background for Dunebug’s breathy, intimate and evocative vocals.
A great effort from the Manchester native, showcasing herself as a prime talent in her genre. Citing influences from the likes of Big Thief, Japanese Breakfast and Phoebe Bridgers, Chi Limpiroj manages to create her original artistic vision, also thanks to introspective lyricism and refined creativity. Speaking about the concept behind ‘Still Dreaming’, Dunebug explains: “A song about being afraid to sleep due to recurring nightmares of an abusive past lover, and the anxiety and dread that follows said nightmares”.
It’s the strong contrast between lyrical and sonic matter that impress us the most. Delivering meaningful and heavy themes, without you even noticing it. Chapeau!
