The brainchild of Milwaukee-based songwriter and producer David McClintick Roberts, Rye Catchers is an act we have proudly featured extensively. From the power-pop gem ‘Sometimes’ to the witty and relatable ‘Stupider’, we’ve followed David and Co. for some time now.
‘Mixed Messages’ is the brand new offering from Rye Catchers, a nine-track album that features some stellar musicians coming along for the ride, most notably bass guitarist Timothy Lefebvre. Known for his work with David Bowie, Elvis Costello, Sting, and so many others, Tim’s involvement brings an unmatched level of sophistication to the project.
Now, whilst I could talk at length about the record, today I’ll just be diving into the album’s final tune, a reprisal of its opener ‘History’. Featuring talented vocalist and voice actor Nikki Simmons, the song contains just the female leads and offers a less retro and more contemporary version of the tune.
A moody yet infectious rendition that highlights Simmons’ emotive vocals, the reprisal wraps up the record with an unforgettable touch. A little 80s, but polished for a new era, the track’s blend of old-school charm and contemporary flair makes it a standout conclusion.
