ilsantino is the retro electro-pop musical project of Paul Nolan, a Dublin-based artist who’s spent the last decade honing in on a unique sound. For his most recent release, Paul joined forces with Los Angeles-based producer Elena Charbila, better known as Kid Moxie. Upon hearing her collaboration with Depeche Mode on ‘Wagging Tongue’, Nolan knew that he had to reach out to the producer. Thankfully for us all, Elena fell in love with the track, and quickly put her own upbeat and funky spin on the tune.
What follows is a synthy, chewy, and contemporary pop song that just hits all the right notes, as ilsantino explores the essence of conflicting emotions. “Is it written from experience? Maybe,” says Paul. As he turns to the likes of Faithless, Goldfrapp, Röyksopp, and The Japanese House for inspiration, Nolan, crucially, brings his very own flavour and spice to proceedings.
Last year, the musician suffered a cardiac arrest weeks after completing the Dublin City Marathon. It didn’t keep him out of the game for long though, and he soon found himself back in the studio, with new creations proving hugely therapeutic to his recovery. A true artist in every sense of the word, I have no doubt we’ll be hearing from Paul again very soon!
