Perhaps not a record for everyone, ‘Bob Marley Had a Shooting Range’ will resonate with all the eclectic peeps out there, the ones enlightened to discover new and exciting music. The track takes its cue from a strong reggae formula, although its scope feels much wider, with a certain jazz flavouring thrown into it. Graz-based outfit Exploding Pig describes it all as ‘Jazz meets 70’s porn music’, and frankly they couldn’t be more right. There’s sleaziness in it, but also tension, a fitting blend between beach-powered chills and retro action movies (any action).
Characterised by a charming trombone, alongside drums, guitars and bass, Exploding Pig can be considered brave trailblazers, walking where no one else has walked before – musically speaking, of course. If the reggae component in ‘Bob Marley Had a Shooting Range’ were not to be in the listener’s taste, the group has more material firmly planted in soul and funk.
With a plethora of records released in 2021 – the result of pandemic isolation – the group now looks back to such tracks with admiration and pride, perhaps opening the gate for further material down the road.
