It turns out, we couldn’t have predicted it anyway: the record is such a peculiar and authentic slice of fierce artistry that’s truly mesmerizing, for once reinforcing the concept behind our whole publication! First and foremost, we should note the intense theatrical character the single has to offer. Driven by Benjamin David’s evocative and lush vocals, ‘Real’ takes charge of the listeners with charisma and confidence, initiating novel-like storytelling that’s as immersive as it gets.
As David explains, the song “tells the story of a ruthless leader who uses his power to hurt people. He spreads fake news and gets away with it. It is a song about the importance of the truth in a world that can sometimes feel totally unreal.” Vaguely inspired by actual, modern events… you’ll be the judge. What we can say though, is that Benjamin is clearly an acute and attentive observer of the contemporary society around him.
The musical counterpoint to such complex songwriting is perfect, and at times it feels like a true musical. The sonic character constantly adapts to the lyrical energy, allowing the track to flow freely towards its glorious resolution. Hailing from London, David champions a fierce and bold experimentalism, while still referencing mainstream pop – a highly relevant formula.
