There’s been a guy from New York sending us a large amount of records in the past two years. He is a very talented musician with limitless creativity at his disposal. This man’s name is Ari Joshua, and the keen reader will certainly remember him from a series of past articles. He excels at choosing the right personnel and building new ensembles. All’s Eye Trio is a great example of that.
Teaming up with fellow musicians Kris Yunker and Ben Atkind – all celebrated figures in their own right – Joshua seems to have found himself a particularly fertile artistic space. Moving tightly together as a collaborative entity, the three creatives conceptualize All’s Eye Trio as a playful, rowdy and at times nostalgic entity, exploring everything from soul-funk to jazz, passing through veiled psychedelic tones. The overarching theme is of course the instrumental prowess enjoyed by the trio, exchanging solos and showcasing their great technical abilities.
‘West Hill Road’ is All’s Eye Trio’s debut effort, a long piece that’s incredibly immersive and inspirational. In it, it’s easy to find traces of former Stax and Motown glory, while also experiencing acid-jazz highs and a certain fusion character. After all, Yunker, Atkind and Joshua don’t restrict themselves to a precise genre, instead bouncing off the walls of their musical imagination.
