When we came across Alec Berlin, we had no idea who he was. A deeper look revealed a world of inspired musicianship and artistic integrity, characterising an artist who has devoted his entire life to art and music making. An accomplished guitarist, Berlin is a fixture in New York musicals, where he often can be found performing in musical ensembles. Championing a career that’s very successful, he also indulges in songwriting, exploring ways to express himself through his favourite instrument, without it becoming an exercise in style.
It’s exactly this research that set him on the right path. You see, Alec wanted to write songs, more than instrumental pieces. But he also wanted to stay true to his real vocation, guitar performances. The solution was to write songs and substitute vocals for his guitar, so as to create instrumental pieces with purpose, with meaning, that could be enjoyed by anyone. Of course, that doesn’t mean there’s no lyrical content. Sure, there are no words, but there’s meaning, there’s space to think and heal. It is not just a solo.
