There’s a lot to unpack in ‘Perseverance’. First off, it’s not a record for everybody: it needs to be discovered slowly, tested through time and space, and it needs to catch you in the right mood. If that happens, you’ll have a glorious time. Sonic references are wide and eclectic, but in short, we’d put the album somewhere in the middle of Nordic electro jazz – Nils Petter Molvaer – and orchestral influences, all blended by a healthy dose of ambient textures and leftfield electronica.
Composed by Italian wizards Marco Simoni (piano and electronics), Lorenzo Cimino (trumpet) and Edoardo Cimino (electric guitar), ‘Perseverance’ feels universal, yet very niche. Majestic, yet intimate. It is both spacious and tight, contrasting long reverbs with near-field textures and an overall sense of resolution.
Describing the inspiration behind the record, Simoni explains: “The name of the album is the same as the rover launched by N.A.S.A to explore Mars. The Rover captured some sounds, some of which are used as a starting idea to develop four different musical ideas, with piano, prepared piano, trumpet, electric guitar and electronics.”
