Dirty Mitts: “We want to carry on the vintage rock sound into the modern era!”

Emerging from the British capital’s smoky skyscrapers, Dirty Mitts are not your typical rock band. In their music and aesthetic, one can find that fierce, unapologetic and rebellious rock’n’roll flair that used to be a staple of the music scenes, a long time ago. A reminder of a golden era long gone, that very same strong character is brought back by the London rockers, infusing their music with electrifying energy and empowerment.

Dirty Mitts are just like that: a powerful guitar riff, punchy drums, and incredibly majestic vocals. Their latest effort, ‘You Better Run! (Villains Theme)’ is exactly the type of artistic hurricane you would expect from the group: among a fiery arrangement, the song is greatly inspired by the Marvel movies, perfectly fitting its anthemic and cinematic imprint.

Intrigued by the project, we caught up with Dirty Mitts to find out more about ‘You Better Run! (Villains Theme)’… Interview below!

Hey guys, how is it going? some of our readers might not be familiar with your project, how would you describe yourself, in a few words?

We are a rock band that puts on a great live show! Our sound is a combination of bluesy, vintage and energetic tunes that are sure to have listeners on their feet.

Your current work is the result of a long journey; How did the band come together?

We are a four-piece band made up of Tommy (singer), Matt (bass player), Mo (guitarist) and Mateusz (drums) – an eclectic group of musicians from the UK, Poland, and Egypt. We came together in 2022, bonded by a shared passion for loud rock’n’roll… Plus Gumtree helped!

If you had the opportunity to pick any artists in the world for a collaboration, who would be your first choice? (and second choice, perhaps?)

AC/DC and Guns N Roses, we want to carry on the vintage rock sound into the modern era!!!

You recently released a fierce and punchy hard rock tune, ‘You Better Run’. Your sound reminds me of the movie ‘The Pick of Destiny’ – do you guys love that retro hard and glam rock aesthetic?

I guess we do. We are inspired by the bands of the 70’s who all have roots in blues. Led Zeppelin, Free, Rolling Stones etc We want to bring that music back to a younger audience!

There’s a superhero theme in the track, could you elaborate more on that?

‘You Better Run’ is a song inspired by the action and epic scale of the first few Marvel films (hence the artwork on our single cover). The rock songs underscoring the battle sequences in Iron Man led me to pick up my guitar and write the opening riff.

This song imagines a world in which people with superpowers have never been seen before. A winged man comes down from the sky and is ‘the first one of our kind’. Just like in the films, the army turns up unaware of how best to handle the situation. Before taking the time to find out whether these powers are forces for good or evil, the army opens fire and carnage ensues. We’ll never know whether or not our ‘boy of flight’ had good intentions, as the open aggression from humanity ignites in him a fierce need for revenge. Our superhuman turns supervillain and emerges victorious.

Do you usually write individually or as a team?

Bit of both – it really depends on the song.

Artistically speaking, what challenges have the last two years presented you with?

Currently, our biggest challenge is growing a fanbase, at grassroots we need all the exposure we can get and people coming to live shows to really make an impact on the world!

What are the next steps for your project? Anything exciting on the horizon?

We have an album recorded which we are drip-feeding as singles and we are going to package together an EP later this year!
