Debuting last year with the texturally uplifting gem ‘Again’, Destiny Imani was bound to grow and reach a bigger goal. After all, the Californian talent has been showcasing impressive productivity, releasing a plethora of singles in a short period of time, while placing the same lyrical attention on each one of them. An exploration of human behaviour and her deep consciousness, Imani’s artistry is firmly planted in the everyday life experience, taking the listener on a journey through relatable emotions and teachable moments.
Now, Destiny returns with her first extended play, a three-track EP titled ‘Out In The Open, Pt.1’. In it, we can proudly observe the way Imani’s style seems to be developing and getting better: immersed in a sea of malleable and modern RnB, the Los Angeles resident embarks on a Pop-fuelled poignant musical trip, also exuding a certain sense of fragility. ‘Loving You’ is perhaps a fitting entrance, with its minimal arrangements and love-themed lyricism. ‘Made For Me’ widens the sonic scope, also showcasing how well Destiny’s vocals fit their surroundings – so controlled, gentle yet intense, Imani’s tone is an absolute joy for the ears.
‘Until The End Of Time’ closes the record with majestic anthem vibes, perhaps the most fierce offering on the record. Speaking about the EP, Destiny Imani explains: “Before the completion of this project I was hiding in every sense of the word. I was hiding a part of who I was, who I loved, and who I wanted to be. Freedom came with the completion of this project as I found strength in the songs that came from my thoughts, feelings, and emotions. ‘Out In The Open’ is everything I have been told, everything I’ve thought, felt, and endured.”
