It doesn’t happen often to witness such nuanced and powerful musicianship. Bernadette Dengler and Hans-Peter de Zeeuw – Dee & d’Z – manage to do exactly that, combining their respective qualities into uplifting, organic and bright musical matter that looks back to the classics of soul and funk, perhaps with a certain fusion edge. Both talented songwriters, Dengler’s also a gifted singer with a stunning vocal tone, so controlled yet so soulful, evocative and dynamic. De Zeeuw, on the other hand, has more of a foothold on production and drumming duties, completing what’s a very compelling line-up.
Active since 2020, the pair debuted their music only last year, racking up relevant stream figures with the jazz-infused gem ‘Flow’. Now, Dee & d’Z return with their latest effort, ‘E.N.E.R.GY, a record that looks with fierce charisma at a more sou-based sound, although the jazz elements are still greatly present, especially in the verse. Once the chorus section hits, it’s an acid-jazz triumph, reminding us of Incognito, among others.
Lyrically, the track explores the constraint of a life dictated by endless rules, extending an anthem to freedom and free will to every listener. As the duo explain: “When we long to break free, what’s going through our minds? How does our body react? Is it even possible to be locked up or will our soul always stay unbound, no matter where we are? Built-up energy needs an outlet!”
