Active in the artistic whirlwind that is New York City, singer and songwriter Dawit is the latest happy discovery we are making this year. Debuting earlier this week with the sultry afrobeat anthem ‘Wonderful’, the talented newcomer seeks to connect to his Senegalese roots, drawing inspiration from a recent trip to the country, the first in 24 years. Being born there, the journey was a special moment for Dawit; in fact, ‘Wonderful wants to celebrate the women he met during his visit to Dakar. An empowering anthem, the record also wants to recognise the resilience and fierceness of all women.
‘Wonderful’ officially takes the shape of a modern afrobeat banger (produced by Ghanaian talent Cobby Dollar), focused on electronic bouncy beats and the singer’s charismatic, luscious vocals. To celebrate the occasion, Dawit also recorded a live performance of the track, which takes the single in a slightly different direction. Framed into acoustic settings, guitars, percussions and backing vocals manage to elevate the tune into pure musical magic, making us appreciate the depth of Dawit’s songwriting and vocal abilities. One thing to note here is his ability to calmly switch between charming falsettos and energetic singing, exchanging lines with his backing vocalist in dreamy fashion. It all resembles a chant, which gently wraps you with appreciation and gratefulness.
