David Finck Shares Soulful and Virtuoso Piece ‘Gentle Journey’

‘Gentle Journey’ is as elegant and soulful as it could be. Echoing acid jazz with fusion formulas and soul stylings, the record thrives on tradition, guided by the sapient hands of David Finck, American bass player with a solid foothold in the New York City Jazz scene and the international pop panorama. Boasting a long performing career, Finck also thrives in composition. ‘Gentle Journey’ is his latest effort, a stunning virtuoso piece blessed by Catherine Russell’s majestic vocals and Andy Snitzer’s tenor sax solos.

At first listen, the record echoes the golden era of fusion and Soul/RnB, evoking the charming and lively atmosphere of a casino in the late 70s and early 80s. Finck was there, and perhaps the track is also a homage to his roots and to what he does best. Packed with instrumental prowess and evocative feels, ‘Gentle Journey’ is Finck’s latest artistic statement – and we are listening.

The only playful disappointment is the missing bass solo, but that’s to be expected: an experienced player like David knows when to take a step back and let the music speak for itself. Speaking about the record, he explains: “It was great to have Catherine Russell who is a wonderful singer. She is now touring with Steely Dan. Andy Snitzer plays a great solo. And the sidemen just kill it. Some happy grooving music.”
