There’s a gentle, whimsical character in ‘Shimmering Lullaby’. Moving with an increasingly pointillistic quality, the track seems to favour short, mellow pulses of sonic goodness, all drenched in spacious reverbs and a sense of limitlessness. It’s an infinite revolving door of aural gold, wrapping the listeners in a liminal, cathartic universe – of course, fictional, yet for five minutes and three seconds it feels very real.
Composed and produced by Australian-based creative Dave Violenza, ‘Shimmering Lullaby’ seeks to celebrate the arrival of his second child Lorenzo. In fact, his son was a catalyst for the record’s final shape, as Violenza explains: “I was struggling to complete the song until Lorenzo arrived two weeks early. Capturing his first sounds was a stroke of luck, and it was exactly what the song needed to come alive. ‘Shimmering Lullaby’ is a celebration of new life, and the joy, love and magic that comes with it.”
The concept of ‘new life’ can perhaps be seen in the sonic elements too: the never-ending series of synthetisers rolling along with their arpeggiator, constantly renewing their intensity and timbre… there’s something magic about that too. We are taken aback by the listening experience, extremely nuanced and evocative. This won’t be a record for everyone, but if one is bold enough to dive into it, the reward will be substantial.
